To celebrate the 50th anniversary of BBC Sci-Fi series Doctor Who, dedicated fan site WhovianNet held a prestigious writing contest. The aim of the contest was to select a number of essays about fans' memories of the show and publish them in a book entitled "The Doctor & I". I was lucky enough to have my essay selected and published.
“ What're you up to?” I asked, “ I'm just about to watch Doctor Who, if you're interested?” replied Dad, “ What's that then?” “ It's a programme about a man who travels through time in a big, blue phone box.” he stated, matter of factly, “ Well okay, I’ve got nothing to lose.” I was fourteen years old when that conversation took place. The year was 2006 and the episode in question was 'New Earth' , David Tennant's first (proper) outing as the Doctor. As I sat there, watching intrigued and enraptured I suddenly found something stirring deep inside me. Something about this quirky, madcap programme struck a chord and from that moment on I was well and truly hooked. I became an avid fan and watched and re-watched any episodes I could get my hands on, be they from 2005 or 1963, it honestly made no difference, just so long as, somewhere in there, there was a madman with a blue box saving the universe.
